Caring For Natural Seagrass Carpets

If you have a busy household with pets and children, a natural floor-covering option such as seagrass carpeting can be a good choice, particularly if your interior décor scheme has a rustic theme.  Seagrass is very hardwearing and durable and is pretty easy to care for, although it will need cleaning from time to time.  Here are some helpful tips on how to care for your seagrass carpets.

Routine maintenance

The best way to keep your seagrass carpet looking good is to simply vacuum it with a strong suction cleaner.  To prevent scuffing of the fibres, set your vacuum cleaner so that the brushes are slightly elevated and work from different directions to ensure thorough coverage.  This will lift any dust or bits of dirt from within the seagrass fibres, leaving the carpet clean. 

You can enhance the wearing qualities of seagrass carpet by applying a light misting of water every now and then.  Spray the carpet (don't saturate it), and then use a damp sponge mop to wipe over the top.  As the carpet dries, the fibres will tighten, relieving any loosening that has occurred through heavy use.

Spills and stains

As with any stain, the key is to blot up any spills as quickly as possible to prevent the liquid from soaking into the matting.  For spills such as liquid candle wax, allow the wax to dry and then scrape it off with a blunt knife.

If the carpet is stained, the safest way to get it clean is to use a special sisal cleaner that is designed for use on natural fibres.  You can get this from cleaning shops.  Simply apply a generous quantity of the powder cleaner to the stain and use a soft brush to spread the product across the stain in all directions.  This helps to distribute the cleaner evenly throughout the seagrass fibres. 

Allow the product to work on the stain overnight.  The following day, vacuum the carpet to remove the powder cleaner.  The carpet should now be clean and stain-free.
