You Can Find Blackout Curtains That Actually Work!

Felicia Carr

Summer is great, everything from waking up to warm mornings to the chirping pleasant morning music is lovely. Everything except your kids waking up at 6 am in the morning. Kids have this innate sense to wake up at the very moment the sun gets up. Blocking the sun can trick your tots into sleeping a little longer, and this is where darkening curtains come in handy. Here's a breakdown of curtains that will reduce or eliminate light for a good morning sleep.

Blackout Curtains with Liners

Curtains with liners are perfect for keeping unwanted sunlight out of a room. A good way of finding blackout curtains is purchasing traditional curtains since they come with a liner behind them. These curtains come in all kinds of color and patterns, making it easier to find a curtain that will compliment your space and at the same time retain the elegant look in your room.

Yes, just the liner!

Blackout liners make a perfect choice where total light blocking is a necessity. The good news is, you don't have to change your curtains. You can transform those curtains that you love into blackout curtains by purchasing liners and adding them to your existing curtains using a hooks, clips or a double curtain hunger. You can purchase blackout liners in fabric shops or the modern day online shops.

Tip – it's important to choose the correct fabric for your curtain lining to allow your curtains a much softer drape. The correct lining will have a more delicate appearance and will allow your curtains to hang beautifully at your window.

Sheer curtains and light-filtering shades

If keeping a room decor light and airy is a concern while trying to keep the light out, a combination of light filtering shades with sheer curtains is a perfect choice. Sheer curtains and light filtering shades work great, especially when you need to set the mood and at the same time achieve some privacy. Since they come in a variety of patterns, colors, fabrics, shapes and sizes, they can easily complement the existing room decor.

Heavy, dark-colored curtains

Heavy, dark-colored curtains give the same effect of blackout curtains, except they have no additional liner. A good example is tightly woven cotton curtains or velvet curtains.

Tip – only choose heavy or dark colored curtains if they work well with your decor.

 DIY blackout curtains

You can DIY your blackout curtains by purchasing both the lining fabric and the blackout drape fabric. You can find these materials at a fabric store.
